Porn vs. Anti Virus

Headache

I can’t get it out of my head. It started some months ago. I am working for an AntiVirus company and wrote the detection for malicious Webseites/Java Scripts.

People started to complain they had to switch off their AntiVirus because it blocked access to their porn sites.

Two things are strange here. And that’s the reason why I can’t get it out of my head.

  1. They tell some stranger about their favourite porn
  2. They trust their porn page more than they trust their security software and disable security.

You normally don’t assume the user will just switch off their protection. But designing security for desktops you must keep in mind:

For a user the security programs on his computer just prohibit him to do something he wants. And if the user has admin/root, he is stronger.

Trust

Just do the math:

If the user trusts the porn page, the user gets porn.

If the user trusts his AV program, he gets nothing.

So the user trusts his porn page.

Resources

Maslow had it right,

Porn is more essential than security. Depressing.

What would Thorsten do ?

A good puzzle is better than a porn page. I would try to find the malicious part in the porn page code. And be glad my porn page was blocked.

..while listening to “The internet is for porn”
